Help build the 'Cateura School of Music & Life' and be a part of transforming lives in Paraguay

CATEURA, A COMMUNITY BUILT ON TRASH BUT TRANSFORMING LIVES

In the small, landlocked, South American country of Paraguay you will find an impoverished community known as Cateura. This community is built around the city garbage dump of the capital city, Asuncion. Most of the people that live in Cateura survive off of others people’s garbage. They spend all day sorting through an enormous garbage mound in order to find recyclable materials that they may be able to sell for a few coins.

THE WORLD SENDS US TRASH, AND WE SEND BACK MUSIC

You would think that nothing of worth could come out of this community that is literally built on trash. However, an innovative initiative was started a few years ago to teach music to the kids in this community. There were not enough instruments available for the kids and no money to buy new instruments so a local man began building violins, guitars, cellos, drums and even saxophones out of recycled garbage. Thus began “The Recycled Orchestra of Cateura” (La Orquestra de Reciclados de Cateura), a traveling orchestra made up of impoverished kids from the Cateura community that plays their recycled instruments for crowds all around the world.

WORK TO BE DONE

Though the orchestra has grown and achieved recognition, the challenges of education and poverty still remain in the Cateura community. For this reason, Transformación Paraguay (a local non-profit partered with the John Maxwell Leadership Foundation) is committed to building the Cateura School of Music and Life, where more kids can learn music and will receive after school support and basic skills training for their parents and relatives in order to help lift these families out of poverty. It’s just one way to bring transformation to a community in need.
